On June 20th, surfers worldwide will welcome the long warm days
of summer and accompanying swells by paddling out and catching
waves in honor of the Sixth Annual International Surfing Day
(ISD). As is tradition with the annual holiday, surfers and other
coastal enthusiasts will do their part to give back to our
oceans, waves and beaches through various organized events such
as clean-ups and restoration projects hosted by the Surfrider

CSUS Prep School goes to Typhoon Lagoon!

CSUS Shark Replenishment Program
-----------------------------------------------------------------
One thing that CSUS members everywhere have noticed is how much
easier it is to have conversations with surfers on the beach than
in the lineup. So, after very little prayer, we have partnered
with the National Fish and Wildlife Administration and have
started a Shark replenishment project. For the NFWA this is a
great thing because CSUS will do the work to add to the number of
sharks in the wild. In addition CSUS offers a broad distribution
channel with chapters all around the country. This is a huge win
for CS as we envision things working this way: once sharks, which
will be farmed in Florida, reach adolescence we will ship them to
chapters around the country. Those chapters will then use them
as an outreach tool by releasing them into crowded lineups and
then sharing Jesus with the surfers fleeing to the beach. We
have Beta tested this idea with great success and very little
draw back – a few minor bites. If you are interested in donating
to this project or would like to be involved in any way please

Chapter Fundraiser wrap

I continue to
be amazed by God's grace and the awesome disciples I encounter as
part of the Christian Surfers ministry. Over the past few months,
Chapters have been diligently holding fundraising and outreach
events. Some Chapters used funds to send members to the National
Conference in California and others using donations to enhance
programs already in place in their community. Thank you,
volunteers for all the hard work and extra effort it takes to

This year's National Conference at Hope Chapel was amazing! The

into the presence of God through worship and the fellowship gave
us a little taste of what heaven is going to be like.(see Group

God is moving through Christian Surfers and it was amazing to
hear the stories of God working in and through surfer's lives.

ESA Easterns goes off!

Once again CSUS had the privilege of serving at ESA Easterns. It
was a beautiful week with fun waves. Our primary task was
organizing and controlling the parking situation. We jumped in
and served in other ways as well. In God's planning, our
strategic placement in the parking area allowed us to greet,
speak with and even minister to individuals as they entered the
contest area. Our team consisted of participants in the contest
and CS members that had come simply as a missions trip. God
blessed us with a wonderful home for the team to stay in. Please
pray about joining the team next year.

Prep School Report

Christian Surfers Prep School '09 kicked off the first weekend of
August. It was an extended weekend that everyone wishes could
have been longer! Sadly, the waves weren't top notch.
Nonetheless, there were some fun ones to be had—particularly on
Saturday.

Groms from up and down the East coast were able to show their
stuff on a clean little Outer Banks swell in picturesque blue
water. When the waves weren't working, the indoor skate park with
a smooth 'wavelike' bowl corner seemed to keep everyone stoked.

Even so, the highlight of the trip was surely the teaching and
fellowship. Both groms and leaders learned valuable and practical
ways to love their neighbors more like Jesus. Dean Plumlee (CS
National Director), lead the weekend's training sessions with the
help of Andy Butler. It was simple, it was practical, it was

Talkin' Story: Surf Expo

Dustin Bryson volunteered this year to work with the CS crew at
Surf Expo. They helped on the final day to break down booths for
four hours! He came away having personally learned why it is

Christian Surfers at the US Open!

The 2009 Hurley US Open of Surfing was the best contest
Huntington Beach has seen in years! The over 400,000 people who
attended experienced firsthand world class surfing, along with
the surf culture and lifestyle most dream about.

In the midst of this larger than life event, a small 10×10 booth
carried a message of hope for a culture that is longing for

Chapter in Focus: Galveston, Texas

What's it like being a surfer from Texas? First, everyone
thinks you surf behind supertankers because there aren't any
waves in Texas, right? Well, 200 days a year waves are breaking
in Texas and 99% of Texas surfers have never surfed behind a
supertanker!

The Galveston CSUS chapter started in 03' in the wake of an
Outsiders movie showing. A unique leadership group made up of
multiple denominations and churches, they embody what God can do
in a group of Christian Surfers that operate in unity. Hurricane
Ike tested their mettle but through it they were able to love on
the other Texas residents and surfers. Check out more of what

US Open

The Hurley US Open of Surfing is the largest surfing contest in
the world, drawing crowds of 400,000 "+" people to the Huntington
Beach Pier July 22-26th. Christian Surfers, in partnership with
Walking on Water and through the support of Orange County
churches, seek to send a local mission team to reach out and see
this year's event impacted by Jesus.

We will do this in a number of ways: our first class booth,
product giveaways, thousands of copies of Walking on Water surf
movies, shaping bay staffed with top surfboard shapers and much

industry, home to the largest surf contest in the world, the US
Open. With a current crop of hungry up and comers including two

Simpson, Huntington Beach remains synonymous with surfing.

What you may not have heard is how God planted the chapter in
Huntington Beach four years ago. Without coordination or even
knowledge of the other, churches and individuals were raised up.
The end result was a chapter serving and reaching out to the surf
industry and local surfers alike. With outreaches to the ASR

Letter from the National Director

I spent the last six days with Nic Mclean (creator of Noah's Arc
- the surf video). I was thinking about how God gave Nic a
passion to make surf videos. Through his obedience and the
obedience of many others, Noah's Arc was created. Through the
obedience of the people at Walking on Water the video was brought
to the world. Through the obedience of CS chapters and churches
the video toured the world. Through the obedience of CS members
people were loved on and invited to attend showings of the movie
and tens of thousands of people met Jesus. Two things struck me
- 1. the strategic planning of God and 2. the obedience of the
saints. Through that everyone wins - people find joy and God
gets glory. So, where has God strategically placed you today and
are you obeying? Remember through obedience you find joy and God
gets glory!

Chapter in Focus: Manasquan

Cold barrels, hardcore surfers, Dean Randazzo and Casino Pier all
come to mind when thinking of Jersey. The Manasquan chapter has
been around now for 5 years plus and is currently headed up by an
on-fire Brazilian, Nestor Wagner. Made up of mostly older folks
they have a unique summer outreach which consists of FREE!!! surf
lessons and loving on people. Their approach to following Christ
is as committed as surfing through winter water temps in the high

coming! This is the five year anniversary of ISD started by
Surfing Magazine and the Surfrider Foundation.

"In addition to over 100 coastal events taking place worldwide,

prizes through various activities. In celebration of ISD's 5th
anniversary, there will be five on-site challenges: You Tube

Letter from the National Director

Sometimes I find that I get very focused on the the small dot in
front of me and miss the bigger picture. Sometimes I forget that
Jesus said, HE would build HIS church and that nothing would stop
it. HE went on to say that I'm simply to "remain" in HIM. It's
not my job to draw the lost but merely to love them and share the
Good News with them. Sometimes my days don't go so well and I
think, "is Christian Surfers doing enough or doing anything for
that matter?"

This week I was working on the praise reports from 2008. To me,
those numbers represent faces and stories, opportunities and the
"brick and mortar" of God glorifying Himself and man enjoying it.
I was blessed as I added up simply one catagory - outreaches and
chapter meetings. These are event where CSUS members
intentionally love on people and truth goes forth. In 2008 this
scenario occured 1,369 times all over the United States. Wow!
God is building HIS Kingdom. I'm just glad I get be a part of
it.

Letter from the National Director

Due to record donations in 2008 Christian Surfers has decided,
with very little prayer, to begin construction on a new retreat
center. This facility will house both the National Office and an
Outreach/Discipleship facility. The central component will be a
new wave pool. We have already opened talks with the ASP about
holding a WCT event here in the near future. Phase one has gone
beautifully (the pool is nearly finished) and phase two is
scheduled to begin this month (the parking garage). We continue
to purchase land for future expansion (as land prices are
excellent right now in central Alabama where the facility is

industry heavy hitter's favorite spot. While Huntington has the
reputation for being the global center of "the industry", Newport
is where they live and come to surf.

CS Newport thrives on a philosphy of truly surrendered surfing,
at surf days some of their members don't even bring boards so
that they can hang at the tent and share their faith in Jesus
Christ! The fruit of their labor is seen in many testimonies of

Prep School 2009!

CS Prep School is for any grom, ages 13-17, that wants to follow
Jesus thru loving their neighbors. This is a training experience
where students will be equipped with a practical "to-do" list for
when they return home.

In order to make it more accessible we will be holding two Prep
Schools in 2009. August 6-9 will be in Cape Hatteras, NC and
will cost $265. August 13-16 will be in Huntington Beach, CA and

Chapter in Focus: Sebastian Inlet

from the East Coast and in particular from Florida? Answer:
Sebastian Inlet.

In this month's Chapter in Focus we are interviewing CS
Sebastian Inlet's own Tripp Hernandez. CSSI draws members from
Melbourne Beach, Vero Beach as well as Ft. Pierce. They also
have a singular passion for evangelism and outreach which results
in them helping out at the many, many contests that come through

Action Sports Retailers San Diego

At ASR this year we decided to shift focus from what the industry
could do for us to what we could do for the industry. January's
show launched this new approach. Starting each day with a "booth
to booth" coffee service, it allowed us to make new friends and
get reacquainted with others. Teams also walked the show silently
praying for people, and from our booth we passed out evangelical
surf DVD's, information about and how to join CSUS.

The most impact came as we offered to help exhibitors move out of
their booth spaces. People seeing us in yellow shirts at work,
started calling from all areas for help. What a blessing for the
35+ volunteers to be used by God to help people and to
demonstrate the love of Jesus!

Chapter in Focus: Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara has a lot of history, it is the first CSUS chapter
started, way back in 1984! Matt Coleman has been the chapter
director now for three years and was a grom in the original
chapter. His passion to serve comes from seeing himself in the
young surfers, where he came from, the importance that CS role
models played in his own life and a desire to pass on that
heritage of serving Jesus in love.

SB is known currently for picking kids with leadership potential,
grooming and discipling them to have an impact for Christ in the
influential SB surf scene. Full of frothing groms between the
ages of 12-17, trips like their annual Jalama campout are always

Sebastian Inlet Pro Outreach

First off, let's thank the Cocoa Beach and New Smyrna chapters
for assisting CS Sebastian Inlet

providing security on two of the coldest nights of the event! A
special thank you to Connie Howard, she was at the event almost
every day with homemade cinammon rolls, French toast and chili.

The Praise Report was that CSSI was able to serve the competitors
and spectators throughout the event with great appreciation. We
had over 30 people sign up for the email list, sold a dozen CS
tees and passed out over 40 Noah's Arc DVD's. We also had some
great conversations with with the surfers and others attending
the event. Thanks again for everyone who committed time and
effort to the event!

Report from Surf EXPO

Surf EXPO may have been the best tradeshow to date. As always we
had many meaningful conversations with thousands of individuals
at the show, but the highlight was our new service opportunity.
We printed up some very noticeable florescent color shirts and
told the different exhibitors that the individuals wearing them
were at the show to help. In love we were able to assist many
different companies in breaking down their booths.

CSUS was also able to give away 500 evangelistic DVD's, 450
Channel magazines as well as hundreds of stickers and brochures.
The last day of the show we had the opportunity to worship with
Vero Beach Calvary Chapel in an early morning service. These same
things will be taking place in San Diego at the ASR Show.

CS Winter Retreat
